Singapore Night Safari

About Singapore Night Safari

In Singapore, aside from the well known Singapore Zoo which features an open zoo concept, there is another separate entity which is managed by the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS). This separate entity, the Singapore Night Safari is equally a well known tourist attraction in the country of Singapore. For being a safari, the Singapore Night Safari has a larger land area compared to the Singapore Zoo where as a whole, the Singapore Night Safari occupies roughly 40 hectares or 0.4 kilometer square of land area.

The Singapore Night Safari is not as historical when compared to the Singapore Zoo as counting back, the Singapore Night Safari was opened at 26th May 1994 which is around 11 years ago. For some facts regarding the Singapore Night Safari, the development of the night safari took four years to plan and another three years to construct before it was opened to the public. Compared to the $9 million Singapore Dollar which was granted by the government of Singapore in the construction of the Singapore Zoo, the Singapore Night Safari used up a staggering $63 million Singapore Dollar as its initial set up cost. The Singapore Night Safari is officially opened by Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

One of the major attractions of the Singapore Night Safari is that, the night safari is known to be the world’s first nocturnal zoo where this means that all of the animals which are found within the night safari are nocturnal animals (animals that sleep during the day and active during the night). Unlike traditional typical nocturnal zoo, the Singapore Night Safari does not reverse the day-night cycles of the animals and instead, the Singapore Night Safari features an open air natural zoo and most importantly, the zoo is only opened at night to visitors. The safari park features eight different geographical zones where these eight different zones can be explored either by trekking through three walking trails or by the automated tram. Three of the walking trails at the night safari are known as Fishing Cat, Forest Giants and as well as Leopard Trail. Around 41 different exhibits can be observed by following through the walking trails and around 18 different exhibits can be observed by taking the tram. To date, there are around 130 animal species and 920 animals where within these numbers, 30% of the animals are known to be endangered species.

Ever since the establishment of the Singapore Night Safari, the interesting concepts and attractions of the night safari have successfully earned various awards for the night safari where some of these awards include Best Leisure Attraction Experience Year 2004 (19TH TOURISM AWARDS 2004), Best Leisure Experience Year 2003 (18 TH TOURISM AWARDS 2003), one of the 100 Singapore strongest brands (SUPERBRAND AWARD 2003) and as well as Top Innovator Award for a Tourist Attraction (TRAVELWEEKLY EAST INNOVATORS AWARDS 2001).
