With a staff power of more than 13000 personnel and S$4.5 billion turnover, the Singapore Changi International Airport is also one of the busiest international cargo airports around the world as the airport recorded a handling of 1,780,000 tons of cargo at the year of 2004. At around year 2005 which is also a turning point (peak) moment for the aviation industries, the Singapore Changi International Airport experienced a rapid growth where this has generated a passenger record of 32.43 passengers and this has elevated Singapore Changi International Airport to be the 26th busiest airport in the world and ranked the 6th at the whole of Asia. With low cost flying becoming a trend nowadays, Singapore also introduced the S$45 million Low Cost Terminal in hope where this low cost terminal would be able to attract various low cost airliners to land and depart from there.
In the early days during the rapid growth of the aviation industries in Singapore, the Singapore International Airport located at Paya Lebar is facing serious congestions problem, particularly during the year 1970 when the number of passengers rose from 300,000 to 1.7 million. Under such immense pressure, the government of Singapore decided to build a new airport after factoring in some issues such as the location of the old Paya Lebar airport. At the year 1975, the government decided to build the new airport on the eastern tip of the main island (Changi) by reclaiming the land and in addition, the airplanes at the new airport can now fly over the sea thus minimizing noise pollution issues to the occupants at the area. The first phase of the airport went into service during the year 1981 and subsequently, second phase of the airport was opened and in addition to that, the low cost terminal for the airport was completed at the year 2006 bearing a simple name, Budget Terminal.
Aside from having a state of the art system and facilities, the Singapore Changi International Airport also offers various other infrastructures which include one of the eleven specially built gates capable of handling the new Airbus A380 aircraft which will be assigned into service by the end of year 2006. In addition to that, there are a wide array of shopping arcades and eating outlets that open 24x7, where prices at Changi Airport are guaranteed to be no higher than tenant's off-airport outlets. Besides that, the airport also has six open air garden which represents a different group of plants. Until today, the Singapore Changi International Airport has won numerous awards which include awards from International Air Transport Association and Business Traveler.
