About the National University of Singapore (NUS)

In Singapore and as well as the Southeast Asia region, the National University of Singapore or better known as NUS remains to be one of the most renowned and well established universities both locally and internationally. Traces of the history in the founding of the National University of Singapore can be found back in the year 1823 when Sir Stamford Raffles proposed the establishment of a college that would provide educational and research facilities in Singapore. Soon at the year 1905, the founding of The Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School took place within Singapore. However around few years later, the name of the school was renamed to King Edward VII Medical School in the year 1913 and was later again renamed to King Edward VII College of Medicine in the year 1921. In the year 1928, Raffles College was founded and two decades later on 8th October 1949, Raffles College and King Edward VII College of Medicine was merged in order to form the University of Malaya. With the formation of University of Malaya, this marked a new beginning in the higher education as the university is given full-degree granting authority. In the year 1959, the University of Malaya was divided into two entities which were then known as University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and University of Malaya in Singapore. After 3 years of the separation, the University of Singapore was established on 1st Jan, 1962 as both the government believed that Singapore Division and the Kuala Lumpur Division of the University of Malaya should become autonomous national universities in their respective countries. Following the formation of the University of Singapore, the University of Singapore was merged with Nanyang University in the year 1980 and thus, the formation of the National University of Singapore.
