About Singapore

Singapore is a prospering country in Southeast Asia. Geographically it is technically the smallest country in Southeast Asia size wise. Population wise, it has a total population of about 4.5 million. Although this number may seem small, keep in mind Singapore in a small country land wise, which brings to the next point, population density. The population density in Singapore is 16,392 per square mile! In this statistic, Singapore ranks extremely high, tied for second to Monaco, and first is the Macau region of China.

These are astounding statistics, no doubt, but there’s another one. Housing estates in Singapore are taken up by 9/10 people! Also half the people use the subway. The extreme subway usage leads to many negatives. One major impact would be the pollution. The largest city, as well as the capital of Singapore is also Singapore.

Singapore is a Malay word meaning "lion city". There supposedly is a myth that a Prince of this island city saw a lion that he said was the first living creature. The total area as I have emphasized is very small, only about 270 square miles and 1.4% water.

The official national language is Malay, but other significant languages include Mandarin, English (resulting from British Imperialism), and Tamil. The government is a parliamentary Republic; the president is Sellapan Ramanathan, and the Prime Minister is Lee Hsien Loong. Singapore's independence was August 31, 1963 from British rule. The Gross Domestic Product is $131.3 billion. The currency is the Singapore Dollar.

One a positive note for Singapore, it has been consistently been rated as the "least corrupt" country in Asia, and is thought of as one the top ten cleanest countries in the world! Politically much of the Indian imperial system has passed on to Singapore. Capital punishment can be given for offenses such as first-degree murder, but also surprisingly for drug trafficking.

Education System in Singapore
The education in Singapore is an extremely high standard. The literacy rate is an unbelievable 95%! The education is very painstaking, and because of this appealing to students on a global level. After the main education there is the PSLE, which is the Primary School Learning Exam. This exam is the equivalent to the SAT test in the U.S.A. Like the SAT, your performance on the Primary School Learning Exam tells whether or not or what type of secondary schools will be attended by that individual.

Singapore Economy
The economy of Singapore is booming! The economical capital is of course the largest city and capital also called Singapore. As previously mentioned, it has a very high GDP (Gross Domestic Product). An ironic twist is that domestically, meaning Singapore the country itself, there is minimal demand. So the natives of Singapore really don't have needs for the local production. Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong are all part of an elite group known as the East Asian Tigers. This is due to having high growth rates economically and industrially.

Singapore Tourism
Due to Singapore's economic prosperity it obviously gets a lot of tourism. An estimated 9 million tourists from out of the country came to visit Singapore in Singapore. The main place for tourism in Singapore is known as the Orchard Road district of Singapore where there are numerous shops and hotels.

Ethnic in Singapore
Singapore is also a very ethnically diverse country. Many immigrants from nearby India, China, and Arabs call Singapore home. Gambling was legalized just last year to get more tourists. As for the actual demographics of Singapore is about 77% Singaporean Chinese, being the predominant ethnic group. On the other hand there is 14% of various Malay groups, and finally Indian Singaporean, which makes up 8% of the Country’s population. The remaining 1% is made up of Jews, Arabs, and Japanese.

Religion in Singapore
Singapore on the other hand is also religiously diverse and expecting. The majority religion is Buddhism, which makes up 40% of the population, next is Christianity, which makes up 14% of the population. The remaining religions are Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism, and Islam, and Sikhism.

Singapore Culture
Singapore is also a very culturally rich town. As previously told Singapore is full of Indian, Chinese, Eurasian, and Arabian ethnic groups. So much of the culture in Singapore involves a mix of these various ethnicities. An important example would be the food known as Singapore cuisine, which to many tourists, is something very appealing almost like an attraction. Another cultural aspect is due to previous British rule, Singapore also has a small English speaking population, which is mostly British English, but there has been some influence from the current American version of English. Little India and China Town also show neighborhoods corresponding with the ethnic groups. Singapore is a very cultural country with a booming economy.
